Greene County-Union Point talks yield frustration, no progress

The Union Point City Council and the Greene County Commission failed again on Wednesday to resolve their three-year-old lawsuit over the city's use of the county's 911 dispatch and radio services, said Union Point attorney Joe Reitman.

 

The court-ordered mediation effort at the Greene County Courthouse took all day and afterward, Union Point Mayor Lanier Rhodes was clearly frustrated.

Safari so good;  Zoo says it will break ground by early fall

Members of the Georgia Zoo, LLC passed out these plastic animals attached to brochures June 13 stating the Georgia Safari Conservation Park will open spring 2020. The 5-year economic impact of the first phase includes 77 direct and 179 indirect jobs and $43 million taxable park revenues, according to the brochures.

Lions Club recognizes Rita Harris with state-wide award

Harris received the 2017-2018 Georgia Lions Outstanding Blind Award during a ceremony in Helen May 19. The award is presented to a blind person for outstanding achievement or unusual services performed in his/her Georgia community. The recipient must be nominated by a Lions or Lioness Club. Harris was nominated by the Madison Lions Club and chosen above nominees from throughout the state.

Several law enforcement agencies were on the scene Thursday as the investigation continues.

 

Investigators with the Greene County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are currently investigating the discovery of the remains of a newborn baby off Chester Road in the White Plains area of Greene County.

The body of a man was pulled from Lake Oconee near the Old Salem campground at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.
